An English low-back elbow chair in solid quarter-sawn oak, dating to the late 19th century. The curved and shaped top rail incorporates an integral handhold and is supported by nine finely turned spindles. The rounded arms sweep into the seat frame to form a continuous horseshoe-shaped surround. The caned seat is raised on turned front legs and plain rear uprights, joined by double stretchers. Constructed using traditional mortise-and-tenon joints, and retaining a warm, well-developed patina with signs of long domestic use.
