English, early 19th century, in elm. The back with a shaped top rail and two shaped horizontal back rests, each with scratch-moulded detail, set between gently curved uprights. The shaped, curved arms are supported on turned baluster posts above square-section front legs. The gently raked rear legs are joined by plain seat rails. The seat is formed from three elm boards, nailed in place.
Of joined construction, with handmade components throughout, and reinforced with later hand-cut iron corner braces fixed with slotted screws. Worn to a deep, rich patina, with signs of historic repair and long domestic use.
