A finely executed early nineteenth-century hand-coloured engraving depicting a Kentish Crow, after the work of the English naturalist and illustrator George Edwards.
Published circa 1815 by Brightly & Childs of Bungay, Suffolk, this print forms part of a tradition of natural history illustration that bridges scientific observation and decorative art. Edwards’ original compositions, first issued in the mid-eighteenth century, were widely admired and later reinterpreted in subsequent editions such as this - retaining their clarity of form while offering a more restrained and accessible presentation.
The engraving is printed in black and delicately finished by hand with transparent watercolour. Close inspection reveals subtle variations in tone and the occasional overlap beyond the engraved line, characteristic of period hand-colouring. The paper has developed a warm, even patina over time, with light foxing and surface markings that speak to its age and authenticity.
Presented in a complementary antique-style frame with a distressed inner liner, the piece is ready to hang and has been selected for its balance of character, tone, and decorative appeal. It sits comfortably within both traditional and contemporary interiors, whether displayed individually or as part of a larger arrangement.
Each print we offer is an original antique. Signs of age - such as gentle toning, foxing, and minor irregularities - are to be expected and contribute to the individuality and presence of the piece.
This piece is offered framed as shown. Alternative framing options and finishes are available on request. We are happy to advise on different styles to suit your space - please get in touch to discuss.
