Late 17th to early 18th century

A charming and intimate Central European devotional panel, probably Bohemian or Southern German, painted on a single, exceptionally dense pine board with gilded details. The composition depicts a haloed saint rendered in the distinctive stylised manner associated with vernacular religious painting of the period.

Although smaller in scale, the panel shares the same artistic language and construction as larger devotional works produced for domestic interiors throughout Central Europe during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Its simplified forms, rich earth pigments and restrained decorative gilding exemplify the enduring regional traditions of sacred painting.

The original single-board pine support remains intact and displays beautifully developed age-related craquelure together with a mellowed, naturally oxidised surface. Under magnification, surviving gilding and original paint layers remain evident beneath the historic varnish. Faint traces of an early inscription survive, although they are now largely obscured through centuries of wear.

Rich in character and devotional presence, the panel stands equally well as an individual object or alongside its larger companion.

Condition

Good antique condition, commensurate with age. Historic craquelure, minor paint losses, age-related wear and movement to the original single-board support. Structurally sound.
