There is something particularly lovely about the everyday objects of another century, made with such care and craftsmanship that they remain a pleasure to hold and use generations later.

This wonderfully characterful antique measuring tape was made by the celebrated Sheffield manufacturer Chesterman, renowned for its precision measuring instruments and tools.

Dating to the late Victorian or early twentieth century, it is housed in a beautifully aged, circular leather case of rich chestnut brown, its surface softened and burnished by decades of handling. The maker's name is impressed into the leather around the central brass winding mechanism, while a delightful little folding brass handle opens to allow the measuring tape to be wound back into its case.

The original woven fabric tape survives, with its bold black imperial numerals and brass-fitted end. It is a particularly charming example of the marriage between practicality and craftsmanship that characterised so many objects of the period.

A lovely curiosity for an antique writing desk, a thoughtful gift for a maker or craftsman, or a wonderful addition to a collection of old tools and instruments. We rather like the idea of it tucked into a Christmas stocking for someone who appreciates the romance of things made long ago.
