A wonderfully decorative vintage edition of The Diary of Samuel Pepys, bound in deep burgundy cloth with elaborate gilt decoration to the front and spine.

This Readers Library edition contains selections from the celebrated diary compiled by Metcalfe Wood. Pepys began his diary in 1660, recording with extraordinary immediacy the world around him, from everyday domestic life and dinners to some of the defining events of Restoration London, including the Great Plague and the Great Fire of London.

There is something particularly appealing about this little edition. The richly patterned gilt binding has the appearance of a much earlier book, while its compact size makes it perfect for slipping onto a bedside table or adding to a stack of old volumes. The pages have mellowed beautifully with age.

There is also a handwritten inscription to the title page, dated 31st May 1931, giving this particular copy a lovely trace of its own history.

One of the vintage books chosen for The Christmas House, intended to be read, displayed, given, and eventually passed on again.
