Arectangular Syrian Sadeli micro-mosaic box, c.1880, the lid inlaid with bone, ebony, dyed bone, and pewter in a dense geometric tessellation of small triangles and hexagonal rosettes within a stepped border, the sides veneered in alternating black and white vertical panels. The interior lined with Lebanon cedar; underside of lid bearing a period pencil inscription: “Constantin / received / Syria / 10 June 1882,”. This example likely produced in Damascus during the Ottoman period.
