A particularly beautiful antique spokeshave, finely fashioned from solid boxwood and possessing the most wonderful, rich amber-coloured patina.

Dating approximately to the late Victorian or Edwardian period, this elegant little woodworking instrument would once have belonged to the traditional cabinetmaker's workshop, where it was used to carefully shape and refine the curves and contours of handmade furniture.

Boxwood was especially prized amongst traditional toolmakers for its exceptional density, remarkably fine grain and ability to withstand the rigours of repeated use. Its beautifully smooth surface made it particularly well suited to precision instruments, and over the course of many years it develops the most glorious, honeyed colour.

This example is especially appealing for its slender proportions and beautifully shaped body, with gently tapering handles and a central steel cutting iron held in place by traditional fixings. The timber has acquired a deep, lustrous patina, with the little darkened marks and softened edges that speak of a long and useful working life.

It is rather wonderful to consider the furniture that may once have passed beneath this little tool. The graceful curves of a chair, the carefully shaped edges of a cabinet, each formed through the patient work of a craftsman's hands.

A lovely little survivor from the old cabinetmaker's workshop, as beautiful an object to admire today as it would once have been useful. A thoughtful gift for a furniture enthusiast, a collector of traditional tools or anyone who appreciates the extraordinary craftsmanship of the past.
