A charming little antique spokeshave, beautifully fashioned from solid beechwood and bearing the unmistakable character of a tool that has spent many years in the hands of a skilled craftsman.

Dating approximately to the late Victorian or Edwardian period, this traditional woodworking instrument would once have been a familiar sight in the cabinetmaker's workshop, used to shape and refine curved surfaces, particularly in the making of chairs and finely crafted furniture.

The beautifully shaped beechwood body has acquired a wonderfully rich, golden-brown patina, its surface bearing the little knocks, marks and gentle wear of a long working life. A steel cutting iron is set into the underside, secured by traditional fixings, whilst the gently tapering handles have been worn smooth through years of handling.

There is something especially appealing about the simplicity of these old tools. In an age before electric machinery, the most elegant curves and delicate details of handmade furniture were achieved through the patience and skill of the craftsman, guided by instruments such as this.

A lovely little piece of cabinetmaking history, perfect for displaying amongst antique furniture, incorporating into a collection of traditional tools or gifting to someone with an appreciation for the old crafts.
