A Christmas Collected, Made & Remembered

There is something about the first whisper of Christmas that makes the familiar world seem suddenly full of possibility. Perhaps it begins on an October afternoon, when the light fades a little earlier than expected and the thought of a fire in the hearth becomes especially inviting. Perhaps it is the scent of woodsmoke caught on the evening air, or the discovery of an old box of Christmas decorations, each wrapped in tissue paper and carrying with it the memory of another December.

And then, almost without our noticing, the anticipation begins. At Terrou Studio, Christmas has always been rather more about the preparations than the day itself. The gathering of greenery, the polishing of silver, the rummaging through cupboards for candlesticks and serving dishes, the wrapping of presents at a kitchen table scattered with ribbon and brown paper. All those little domestic ceremonies that make a house feel wonderfully alive at Christmastime.

This year, we have gathered some of our favourite things together into a rather special collection.

Welcome to The Christmas House.

A House Dressed for Christmas

We have always believed that the loveliest Christmas houses are those that wear their decorations with a certain happy informality. A length of velvet ribbon tied around a branch of fir. An old brass candlestick brought down from a bedroom and placed upon the dining table. A bowl of walnuts and oranges on the sideboard. Little parcels waiting patiently beneath the tree.

There is no need for everything to match. In fact, we rather prefer it when it doesn't.

The most beautiful festive interiors are often assembled over many years, their decorations acquired here and there, each belonging to a different chapter in the life of a home.

An ornament bought on a winter holiday. A stocking made for a baby's first Christmas. A rather battered decoration rescued from a box of forgotten treasures. Things which, in another setting, might seem perfectly ordinary, yet become quite indispensable once December arrives.

It is this wonderfully personal, collected sort of Christmas that has inspired our Christmas House.

Made by Hand, Kept for Generations

We find a particular pleasure in making something for Christmas. Perhaps it is because the season itself is so bound up in tradition, or because the things we bring out each year so often become the keepers of our happiest memories.

For this year's collection, we have been rather busy at Terrou Studio, cutting beautiful lengths of cotton velvet, laying out handwoven ginghams and stitching together a very limited number of handmade Christmas stockings.

Every stocking is made individually, using natural materials and traditional sewing techniques, with the hope that it might become one of those precious things brought down from the attic year after year. We imagine them hanging from a mantelpiece on Christmas Eve, their little toes growing round with oranges, sweets and carefully chosen surprises. Perhaps one day, long after their first Christmas, they will be hung by another generation, their familiar fabrics recalling the Christmas mornings of childhood.

Some are made from wonderfully soft velvet, others from beautiful handwoven cottons, with gathered frills, contrasting cuffs and old-fashioned checks.

Many of our fabrics are available only in very small quantities, making each design especially limited. Once a particular cloth has been used, there may be no more to be found.

There is something rather lovely about that.

The Magic of Candlelight

If there is one thing capable of transforming an ordinary winter evening into something quite extraordinary, surely it is candlelight. The golden flicker across old furniture, the wavering shadows against a wall, the gentle glow upon a table laid for supper.

For The Christmas House, we have chosen beautiful candles made from pure, virgin beeswax, a material that feels particularly fitting for this time of year.

It is extraordinary to think of the work of thousands of bees, gathering nectar throughout the warmer months, building their delicate waxen combs with such remarkable precision.

From this wonderful natural material come candles of the most beautiful golden colour, carefully made by hand and possessing all the character of the wax from which they began.

There is something almost ceremonial about lighting one as evening falls. The striking of a match, the small gathering flame, the familiar domestic world settling into its winter finery.

We can think of few lovelier accompaniments to a Christmas evening.

Little Treasures Beneath the Tree

And then, of course, there are the presents. We have always been especially fond of gifts with a little history.

An antique jewel tucked into a velvet-lined box. A curious vintage object chosen for someone who is particularly difficult to buy for. Something beautifully made, unexpectedly discovered, and quite unlike anything to be found on the ordinary high street.

The pleasure of giving an antique is that its story began long before the moment it is unwrapped.

Perhaps it has spent a hundred Christmases in other houses, witnessed candlelit suppers, family celebrations and the changing fortunes of generations. There is a wonderful romance in imagining the lives that have unfolded around these objects before they find their way into our own.

Within The Christmas House, you will find an assortment of antique and vintage treasures, including smaller curiosities and stocking fillers chosen with the same care and affection as our larger pieces.

We rather like the idea of a Christmas morning where the gifts beneath the tree have been gathered slowly, selected for the people who will receive them, and cherished long after the wrapping paper has been cleared away.

After all, the most memorable presents are seldom those which happen to be fashionable in a particular year. They are the ones that somehow feel as though they were always meant to belong to us.

Christmases Past, Christmases Yet to Come

There is an ancient magic in the way Christmas brings different generations together, even when they are separated by many years. The scent of a specific cake can return us instantly to a childhood kitchen. An old decoration can recall the hands that once hung it upon the tree. The sight of a familiar stocking beside the fireplace can make us feel, just for a moment, that we are very small again.

Perhaps this is why we are so drawn to old things at Terrou Studio.

They remind us that a home is built gradually, through the objects we choose to live with and the memories that gather around them. We hope The Christmas House will encourage a little of that same spirit. The joy of bringing something old into a new home, of choosing natural materials, of making and mending, of giving thoughtfully, and of filling our houses with things we might one day pass on. Not a Christmas that must be reinvented each year, but one that grows richer with every passing December. A Christmas of candlelight and conversation, of overflowing stockings and ribbon-tied parcels, of familiar traditions and wonderful new discoveries. And, above all, of the things that make a house feel like home.

An Invitation to The Christmas House

We have spent these past weeks busily gathering, making, photographing and preparing a collection which feels especially dear to us. There are little treasures to be discovered, thoughtful gifts to be wrapped, and beautiful things waiting to become part of somebody else's Christmas traditions.

Some are very old. Others have only just been made. Each has been chosen with the same affection for craftsmanship, character and the wonderful stories that objects can carry.

The Christmas House opens its doors this evening, Friday 9th October, at 7pm.

We do hope you'll come in.

With love,
